Values Rooted Action
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
I am Christina Thompson, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maryland. I have been in practice for about 6 years. My practice is currently conducted through telehealth only for adults and couples located in Maryland. I see clients Monday to Friday. In our sessions, I often combine elements of CBT, DBT, ACT, and somatic and mindfulness based practices. I also draw from Gottman methods when working with couples. My role is to sit with you as we explore your internal patterns and practice new skills together. I offer a free consultation through Alma to discuss how we might work together on your specific needs and goals in a way that feels supportive and clear.
Noticing Internal Patterns
In our work together, we look at the ways you interact with your own thoughts and feelings. You might notice a recurring internal critic when you prepare for a meeting or a sense of hesitation when you try to speak up in a relationship. We practice observing these moments as they happen without trying to force them away. This process involves identifying the physical sensations that show up in your body during stressful times. By noticing these patterns, we create room to look at them with curiosity. We focus on simply being present with your experience as it exists in the current moment.
Identifying Personal Values
We spend time exploring the qualities that are important to you in your daily life. You might find that you want to prioritize being a present parent, a reliable friend, or a creative coworker. Sometimes these desires get buried under expectations from others or old habits that no longer fit. We look at what it means for you to live in a way that feels honest. This is not about meeting a specific standard but about understanding the direction you want to move in. We talk about how your daily choices align with the person you want to be while in Maryland.
Practicing Mindful Actions
Once we clarify what matters to you, we look at small ways to practice those values. If you care about connection, we might explore what it looks like to call a family member. If you value rest, we might look at the experience of sitting quietly for a few minutes. We treat these actions as experiments. We observe what happens when you try something new and how it feels to step toward a value. These sessions provide a space to talk through the barriers that show up. We focus on the process of taking steps rather than achieving a specific result or outcome.
Building Flexibility With Thoughts
Our minds often generate stories about who we are or what we can do. You might have a thought that tells you a task is too difficult or that you should avoid a certain conversation. We practice seeing these thoughts as mental events rather than facts. Using mindfulness based tools, we work on staying present even when your mind is busy or loud. This skill helps you stay focused on your chosen actions. We explore how to remain grounded in your values during everyday situations like a long commute or a busy workday. The goal is to keep moving toward what you care about.
