Preparing for Telehealth
Preparing for telehealth can be simple: choose a private space, consider headphones, check that your internet connection is stable, and make sure you are physically located in Maryland during the session. A little preparation can reduce distractions and help you speak more freely. You do not need a perfect office or a carefully styled background. The goal is a setting where you can hear, be heard, and give the conversation your attention for the time we meet. If you share your space with children, family, or roommates, think ahead about sound and interruptions. A fan, sound machine, or headphones may add privacy when appropriate. Put a note on the door if that works in your household. Make the plan realistic for your environment rather than expecting complete silence. If privacy changes unexpectedly, tell me so we can pause and decide what is appropriate. Telehealth should still leave you in control of what you share and when you share it.

Choose a Private Space
Think about where you can speak without being overheard or interrupted. That might be a room with a closed door, a quiet home office, or another private location in Maryland. Let people nearby know when you need uninterrupted time if that is possible. If privacy at home is difficult, bring that question to the free consultation so we can talk through what a workable setup might involve.
Use Headphones if Helpful
Headphones are optional, but they can make the conversation easier to hear and reduce the chance that someone nearby hears my side of it. Choose a comfortable pair and test the microphone before the session. Put your device on a stable surface so you do not have to hold it throughout the conversation. These small choices can make the technology feel less present once we begin talking.
Check the Connection
A stable internet connection helps protect the flow of the session. Before we meet, charge your device, close unnecessary programs, and open the secure video link with enough time to address a simple update or audio setting. Keep a phone nearby in case the connection drops and we need to decide how to reconnect. You do not need technical expertise. A quick check is usually enough.
Be in Maryland
You must be physically located in Maryland during therapy sessions because that is where I am licensed as an LCPC. For couples therapy, both partners must be in Maryland during the session. You can join from different private locations if needed, as long as each person is in the state and can participate safely. If travel may affect an appointment, contact me before the session so we can discuss scheduling.
Make the Space Yours
Keep water, tissues, or a notebook nearby if those things help you feel settled. Silence notifications and give yourself a few minutes before the appointment rather than moving directly from another task. Afterward, leave a little space before returning to work or family responsibilities when possible. These are options, not requirements. Your surroundings do not need to look a certain way. A familiar chair, a charged device, and enough privacy to be honest can provide everything needed for a meaningful conversation.
